Pond Health Assessment & Water Quality Monitoring
Mizu Aquatic Systems conducted an Aquatic System Health Assessment and follow-up water quality monitoring programme for the koi pond at The Sanctuary Shopping Centre in Somerset West. The assessment focused on identifying underlying causes of system instability, fish stress, and filtration limitations within the approximately 222 000L aquatic system.
Through water quality testing, system diagnostics, and behavioural observations of the koi fish, several underlying risks were identified. Detailed Aquatic System Health Reports were compiled to provide management with a clear understanding of the pond’s overall stability, identified risk factors, and practical recommendations for both short-term stabilisation and long-term system improvement.
After conducting a follow-up water quality test, we managed raise the KH from 40ppm back to 90ppm, greatly increasing the stability of the water quality and mitigating a potential imminent pH crash.
Aan De Paarlberg Guest House
Pond Health Assessment
Mizu Aquatic Systems conducted an Aquatic System Health Assessment for the koi pond at Aan de Paarlberg Guest House in Paarl, Western Cape. The assessment focused on evaluating overall pond stability, water quality, oxygen availability, filtration performance, and long-term system resilience within the approximately 6650L aquatic system.
Although the pond remained visually clear and stable, the inspection identified early signs of underlying instability related to oxygen supply. A detailed Aquatic System Health Report was provided outlining the pond’s overall stability score, identified risk factors, and practical short-term and long-term recommendations to improve system balance, oxygen stability, and filtration resilience.
The owner implemented our recommendations, and reported back that the pond is in great condition and that his fish are active again and no longer grouping at the bottom.
Inherited Residential Pond
Pond Health Assessment
The pond came with the purchase of the property, but suffered from poor visibility, excessive organic debris and declining aesthetics among other issues as well. The fish were difficult to see, the pump broke down and the system was beginning to look neglected.
The goal was to restore balance and improve overall pond health and provide help the owner achieve a result that bring joy to their space.
The pond contained:
Significant leaf accumulation.
High organic load.
Poor visibility & foul smell
Algea growth.
We assessed the filtration setup, tested the water quality on-site and inspected the fish behaviour. A few problems were then identified and the detailed diagnostics report provided the owners with a clear route foreward to fix this pond.
Just over a month later the pond has transformed into a thriving ecosystem that looks like a slice of nature in their backyard. Fish are clearly visible and active, water clarity is greatly improved, organic debris and sludge cleaned out and plants providing both aesthetics and function.
The slightly darker colour of the water is caused by naturally occurring tannins from plants and groundwater and does not indicate poor water quality. In fact, many healthy natural ponds and rivers display similar characteristics.
At Mizu Aquatic Systems, our goal is always to achieve healthy, stable and beautiful aquatic ecosystems.
